Food labels like 'sell by', 'use by', 'best before', and similar terms can be confusing. Most indicate peak quality, not safety, and are not strict indicators of spoilage. Foods often remain safe past these dates, especially when stored properly. Storing food at or below 40 °F or freezing it at 0 °F can keep it safe, as freezing slows down microbes, preventing spoilage and foodborne illnesses. For optimal use, refer to storage time charts for dated products.
